Influenced by his ancestors’ artistic heritage, Ren Mingjun has loved calligraphy since childhood. He began practicing calligraphy at the age of eight. Over more than 40 years of studying art and calligraphy, he has immersed himself in ink pools, diligently researching traditional Chinese calligraphy techniques and theories. For decades, he has studied the works of ancient masters such as Ouyang Xun, Zhao Mengfu, Wang Xizhi, and Chu Suiliang. While inheriting traditional calligraphy, he integrates various styles, thinks innovatively, and maintains a tireless, humble, and diligent attitude toward learning. He widely absorbs inspiration, draws on diverse strengths, combines the merits of stele and帖 (tie) scripts, integrates characteristics of various scripts, discards the coarse and retains the refined, thus forming his own unique style. His works are mainly in cursive and running script. Since their debut, they have shown the robust foundation of Wei steles, the strength and grandeur of Tang regular script, combining majestic tone with elegance, thickness with boldness, possessing an archaic charm without artificial imitation of antiquity.
Especially after retiring from the military in 1993, he has consistently maintained the posture of a veteran soldier, advancing along the long path of artistic learning. Driven by an immense passion for calligraphy and unwavering perseverance, he has practiced diligently without pause, achieving rich results in "bangshu" (large-character calligraphy) and left-hand calligraphy. Experts comment: “His brushwork is vigorous and powerful, free and unrestrained, forceful and decisive; his characters are strong yet graceful, uninhibited and spontaneous, showing simplicity intertwined with brilliance—truly a unique style that fully reveals the charm of calligraphic line art.”
