Dong Shumin, native of Gu'an, Hebei, was born in June 1955 and joined the military in December 1973. He holds a postgraduate degree. He once served as Deputy Director of the Organization Department of the Political Department of the Armed Police Force, Director of the Office of the Command Department, Deputy Political Commissar of the Logistics Department, and Political Commissar of the Chongqing Corps. He holds the rank of Major General. He is a representative of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and a member of the 12th National People's Congress.Dong Shumin is also a member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, advisor of the Chongqing Calligraphers Association, advisor of the Chongqing Municipal People's Congress Art Gallery, honorary president of the Chongqing Entrepreneurs Association, president of the Chongqing Great Wall Calligraphers Association, and president of the Southwest Great Wall Calligraphy Institute. He is a famous general poet, writer, and calligrapher. Dong Shumin's calligraphy is mainly derived from Zhang Xu and Huai Su, and he has also studied the "Two Wangs". His cursive script is particularly outstanding, with strong brushwork and abundant momentum, often giving an ancient feeling. He is not bound by the old techniques of the ancients, nor does he blindly pursue new elegance, thus forming his own unique calligraphic style. His works have been specially invited to participate in the 10th National Calligraphy Exhibition, selected for the "China Hundred General Calligraphy Exhibition", and published in many newspapers and magazines such as the People's Daily, Renmin Hua Bao, the PLA Daily, Guangming Daily, Beijing Evening News, Chongqing Daily, and Chinese Calligraphy. His works are collected by several embassies and consulates of China in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Chile, Venezuela, and other countries. He has published calligraphy poetry collections "Shumin's Calligraphy Works", "Yunnan Travelogue" and "Shumin's Poetry", with the title written by his teacher, the renowned educator and calligrapher Ouyang Zhongshi. He has also published books such as "Newly Compiled Tutorial of Marxist Philosophy", "Youyan Wind", "China's Anti-drug Efforts", and TV scripts such as "Anti-drug Efforts" and "Ancient Sword Blood Shadows."
