Song Huxin
Personal Profile

Song Huxin, from Hu County, Shaanxi Province, was born in 1935. From an early age, he was deeply influenced by his family and developed a profound passion for calligraphy. He studied the styles of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi (the Two Wangs), Zhang Xu, and Huaisu; later, he became a direct disciple of Qi Baishi. He further devoted himself to the study of Zhang Zhi, the Two Wangs, Mi Fu, Huaisu, and Sun Guoting’s running-cursive scripts, absorbing widely from diverse sources. In recent years, he has also explored the masterpieces of Wang Duo and Yu Youren, gaining considerable insight. He excels in all script styles, combining solid traditional foundations with contemporary characteristics—his works are grand and vigorous, powerful yet free-spirited, with thick, dense lines and rigorous structures; balanced between roundness and angularity, harmonizing strength and gentleness, expansive and dynamic, uniquely distinctive. Ultimately, he forged his own style: “majestic, elegant, extraordinary, and fluidly ethereal,” standing out distinctly in today’s calligraphic world. In painting, he studied Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Xu Wei, Bada Shanren, and Wang Yuanzhang. His landscape paintings integrate ancient and modern elements, forming a unique personal style. His ink-and-wash works have repeatedly received acclaim in national painting and calligraphy exhibitions. His calligraphy has been exhibited at the 8th National Couplets Exhibition (hosted by the China Calligraphers Association) and won the top prize at the 7th National Calligraphy Exhibition, earning him the title of “Five-time Champion.” He is acclaimed by collectors as one of the most valuable contemporary artists in painting and calligraphy. His works have been included in “Famous Chinese Painters and Calligraphers of the Twentieth Century,” where he received the title “Artist of the Century’s Merit,” and in “Selected Masterpieces of Chinese Artists,” winning an Excellent Work Award. Now in his eighties, he remains devoted to brush and ink, diligently practicing and striving for transcendence, fully embodying the demeanor of a true master.
In August 2013, he was honored with the title “Artisan for China’s State Gifts,” with his calligraphy priced at 80,000 RMB per square foot and his fine art pieces at 100,000 RMB per square foot, accompanied by an official price certification. He has repeatedly won gold and silver awards in national, provincial, and municipal calligraphy competitions. His works have been sold extensively to the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other regions, receiving widespread acclaim. He has held solo exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other cities. His artworks have frequently been presented as gifts by overseas Chinese media to domestic and international guests and are collected by numerous museums, art galleries, and cultural institutions across China.
