Personal Profile
Zhang Hongguo, pen name Wen Yuan, was born in Zibo, Shandong. Since childhood, she inherited her family’s scholarly tradition and practiced calligraphy under the personal instruction of her grandfather, copying the classic works of the four great regular script masters: Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, and Zhao Mengfu.
Later, she became a disciple of Liu Yongtai, an eminent contemporary master of painting and calligraphy and a National First-Class Artist, who was himself an inner-disciple of Qi Baishi. Among many distinguished disciples, her master bestowed upon her the artistic name “Wen Yuan,” rich in meaning, symbolizing the enrichment of cultural circles with the grace of a female artist, thus becoming a second-generation disciple of Qi Baishi.
She furthered her studies in the Advanced Research Class at the China National Academy of Painting. Her calligraphy and painting works have won numerous awards in exhibitions and competitions both domestically and internationally.
Currently serving as: Vice President of the Wang Xizhi Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Art Research Institute.

Her works have been selected by China’s Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Foreign Affairs as state gifts; several domestic and foreign leaders have collected Zhang Hongguo’s masterpieces.
