Yu Xueyong
Yu Xueyong, styled Shangwu, Buddhist name Changxue. Born in 1966 in Changqing, Jinan—the hometown of the Tang Dynasty monk Yijing—Yu has been painting since childhood, studying under national painters Feng Zengmu, Guo Zhiguang, Xie Weichu, and Han Qingsheng. He graduated from Shandong Institute of Art and Design in 1977 and furthered his studies in the Special Training Class for Painting and Calligraphy Arts at Tsinghua University in the 1990s.
State First-Class Artist, Member of the China Artists Association, Member of the Shandong Artists Association, Guest Professor at Shandong Institute of Art and Design, Honorary Advisor to the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Honorary Chairman of the China Association of Craft Artists, Vice President of the China Calligraphy and Painting Masters Research Association, Vice President of the Shandong Qinluyuan Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Vice President of the Shandong Lingyan Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Academician of the China Contemporary Art Research Institute, Member of the China Collectors Association, Member of the China Contemporary New Ink Wash Art Research Institute, Council Member of the Shandong Petrochemical Calligraphy and Painting Artists Association, and Shandong Provincial Artisan. Signed artist of the Luobei Art Center of Economic Magazine. His calligraphy and painting works have won awards numerous times in national and provincial-level exhibitions.
Much of Mr. Yu Xueyong’s artistic career has been devoted to Chinese painting, specializing in landscapes and bird-and-flower subjects. He has long practiced and copied the cursive script styles of Huaisu and Zhang Xu, excelling in traditional ink paintings of birds, flowers, insects, fish, and landscapes. His works are widely cherished by all sectors of society and distributed extensively. Many of his masterpieces have been included in major art anthologies. His artworks are collected and permanently displayed in institutions such as the Qi Great Wall Art Exhibition Hall, Shandong Zhang Ye National Studies Hall, the Ten Thousand Buddha City Calligraphy and Painting Corridor, and the NPC & CPPCC Reception Office. In 2016, Jinan Television Station and the Xin Changqing Daily published special features on Mr. Yu’s artistic achievements, generating strong social responses. Revered for his moral integrity and artistic excellence, Mr. Yu Xueyong is hailed as an artistic luminary of Changqing District whose virtue and filial piety shine brightly.
His landscape paintings employ refined, agile, and delicate brushwork to create elegant, lush, and profound artistic effects. They are frequently sought after and collected by museums, chambers of commerce, and private collectors.
Work: “Hongyun Dangtou” (Auspicious Fortune) — Awarded first prize in the National Calligraphy and Painting Competition in 2010, collected by the Shandong Provincial Museum, and later acquired by a Beijing entrepreneur for RMB 1.28 million.
Work: “Autumn Mountains with Crimson Leaves” — Sold for RMB 280,000 at the Beijing Rongbaozhai Auction in 2012 to a Shanghai collector.
Work: “Ten Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” — Won first prize again in the National Calligraphy and Painting Competition in 2014, collected by the Nanjing Chamber of Commerce for RMB 860,000.
Work: “Six Blessings” — Collected by a Korean collector for RMB 160,000 in 2017.
