Personal Profile
Tian Yongtao, male, born in 1997, from Dejiang County, Guizhou Province, graduated from the Calligraphy major at Guizhou Minzu University, member of the China Penmanship Association, awarded the title of "Outstanding Penman in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement," with works published in Chinese Seal Carving · Steel Pen Calligraphy. Since childhood, I have been passionate about calligraphy, especially steel pen calligraphy; I recall that in my youth, I often practiced writing on blackboards during free time. Whenever I managed to produce one or two satisfactory characters, I would feel delighted and content. My formal entry into calligraphy began in my senior year of high school, when I was fortunate enough to learn under a master teacher, after which my skills began to improve. Initially, I studied the style of Ouyang Xun, emulating his balanced yet forceful brushwork and dynamic structure as my foundation. Over time, I progressed to practicing small regular script. My master said: “The ultimate masters of calligraphy are Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, with the Wei-Jin period as the root. However, beginners who directly study Wei-Jin styles often become confused; it is better to first study later styles before returning to trace back to the Two Wangs. Moreover, one should emulate the brush rather than the engraved stone.” Thus, I began with Ming dynasty calligraphers. I first studied Wang Chong, while also exploring Wen Zhengming—learning Wang’s compositional forms and Wen’s brush techniques, thereby integrating the strengths of both. Later, I returned to the roots, studying Wang Xizhi’s Huangting Jing, marveling at the elegance and subtlety of its brushwork and structure. I practiced it relentlessly, unable to put it down. After prolonged study, I turned to Zhong Yao, drawn to the noble, classical beauty of his Xuanshi Tie, striving to internalize and replicate it daily, achieving steady progress.
