Over the past hundred years, in our pursuit of "modernization," we have resolved to take the lead in the future—from initial research, to the sprint after reform and opening-up, to the current race. But where is Yi'an? I believe the most important thing is the inherent excellence of traditional civilization. The inheritance of civilization must be built upon pride in civilization, and the condition for such pride is self-reflection. By merely understanding the essential energy of traditional Chinese civilization and its connection with "modern civilization," we can grasp the direction of future civilizational revival, and thereby investigate the value and significance of calligraphy innovation.

In general, the greatest characteristic of "modernity" is a "philosophical-scientific system" civilization, which represents the return and exaltation of ancient Greek rational energy in Europe after the Renaissance; before 1840, Chinese civilization was an agrarian civilization, attributable to a "skill-based system" civilization. It is an understanding and expression of artistic standards under conditions of technical mastery, as the saying goes, skill approaches the Dao. Chinese calligraphy emerged within this civilization—a poetic dwelling grounded in technique. It is a form of civilization that emphasizes intuition and non-rationality, sharply contrasting with Western civilization, which emphasizes logic and rationality. Therefore, the modernization of calligraphy should not be this kind of "modern" modernization, but rather a modernization centered on the energetic essence of our outstanding traditional civilization, incorporating certain modern elements. It can be seen that the century-long journey of Jiangsu calligraphy has consistently followed the civilizational energy of this discipline, serving as a quintessential contemporary "specimen" for the transmission of this civilization, and also forming a crucial reference system for determining the future trajectory of calligraphy toward modernity.

To be human means to preserve the profound essence of our traditional civilization and integrate the roots of correct modernization proven by prior historical experience. The modernization of calligraphy is not simply about transforming our calligraphy using the concept of "modernity." "Modernity" is a dynamic temporal concept. We must view our traditions, calligraphy, and civilization with a broader perspective, a more open-minded attitude, and especially deeper reflection, laying the foundation for constructing modern civilization and accomplishing the true renaissance of Chinese civilization.
