Zhang Duo Da
Zhang Dada, style name Dashih. Born in 1971 in Jilin, Northeast China, currently residing in Beijing. Disciple of the second generation of Qi Baishi, National First-Class Artist, National First-Class Sculptor, and the First Person in China for Golden Shrimps.
Graduated from the Chinese Painting Research Class at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. Currently a member of the China Artists Association, member of the China Society of Arts and Crafts, member of the China Jade Carving Association, council member of the China Calligraphy and Painting Artists Public Welfare Alliance, researcher at the Qi Baishi Art Research Institute, certified artist by the China Huaxia Calligraphy, Painting, Seal Carving Appraisal and Certification, and member of the China Huaxia Wanlixing Calligraphy and Painting Artists Association.
In his early years, he received direct instruction from painters and art educators Wang Liesheng and Lü Huifu; professors Zheng Hongbo from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts and Han Weijing from Liaoning Academy of Fine Arts. Later, he became a disciple of Dong Changqing, a direct student of Qi Baishi, and received authentic transmission from Master Dong. He devoted himself to studying Qi-style painting techniques, adopting the methods of Master Baishi and taking nature as his teacher. He developed a unique ink-and-wash style characterized by lightness, thinness, spirituality, and elegance. He pioneered the Golden Shrimp series themes, including “Group of Dragons Playing in Water” and “Hundred Dragons Scroll.” His brushwork is mature and bold, colors bright and vivid, forms simplified yet expressive, and his artistic conception is simple and profound. His depictions of golden shrimps and crustaceans are full of delightful charm, earning him the title “First Person in China for Golden Shrimps.” His works have been widely recognized and collected by all sectors of society. His artistic value has been appraised by the Art Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Culture of China at RMB 12,000–20,000 per square foot. He is now one of the leading figures among the second-generation disciples of Qi Baishi.
In 2002, “Golden Dragon Playing in Water” was selected for the “16th Exhibition of New Artists and New Works,” hosted by the China Artists Association;
In 2003, his ink painting won the “Excellent Award” in the “Entering Peach Blossom Spring” National Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition and was awarded the title “Hundred Masters of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting”; in the same year, his ink painting “Three Friends of the Water Palace” won the Second Prize in the “Jiangsu Province Anti-Corruption Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition”;
In 2005, “Viewing the Sea” won the “Innovation Award” in the large-scale art event “Great River Spring – Fifth Contemporary Masters Exhibition,” jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and the China Artists Association, and was awarded the honorary title “Outstanding People’s Artist”;
In 2006, “Three Friends of the Water Palace” won the Silver Award in the “Beijing Third Calligraphy and Painting Competition”;
In 2007, he participated in the “Beijing Art Team Visit to Revolutionary Old Areas,” and his plein-air works were published in the collection “Jiangnan Artists’ Creative Works in Revolutionary Old Areas”;
In August 2008, he successfully held the “Zhang Dada Solo Exhibition” in Lanzhou, Gansu Province;
In October 2009, he successfully held more than ten solo exhibitions, including the “Zhang Dada Calligraphy and Painting Art Exhibition” in Tianjin;
In 2010, he successfully held a solo exhibition at the Songzhuang Art Center in Beijing;
In 2011, he held the “Zhang Dada Modern Ink Exhibition” at the Gaobeidian Exhibition Center in Beijing;
In 2012, he held a solo exhibition at Shichahai in Beijing;
In 2013, he held a solo exhibition at the China Calligraphy and Painting Collectors Association in Beijing;
In 2014, he held a solo exhibition at the Capital Academy of Painting. His works have been highly favored by numerous cultural institutions, galleries, and auction houses both domestically and internationally, and have been collected by official bodies, collectors, and entrepreneurs in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and other regions. His pioneering work “Golden Dragon Welcoming the Spring Tide” was auctioned for RMB 380,000.
In 2015, he held the “Zhang Dada Modern Ink Exhibition” at the Guoxin Gymnasium in Qingdao, Shandong Province.
In 2016, his work “Nine Dragons Welcoming the Spring Tide” was exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum and selected as part of its permanent collection.
In 2017, he participated in the “Walking Through Storms Together – Zhang Dada Art Exhibition” at the Saint Lisa International Art Museum in Beijing, which received a strong social response.
In August 2018, he successfully held the “Zhang Dada Solo Exhibition” in Shenzhen.
In October 2019, he successfully held the “Zhang Dada Calligraphy and Painting Art Exhibition” in Hong Kong; his work “Hundred Dragons Scroll” was auctioned for RMB 980,000;
In 2020, he successfully held a solo exhibition in Ruili, Yunnan Province; his works have been collected by official institutions and numerous collectors in Southeast Asia.
