Personal Profile
Zhang Wu, a renowned calligrapher, styled Gengfuzi, graduated from the College of Arts at Hunan Normal University. He is a council member of the China Professional Painters Association, a member of the China Calligraphers Association, a member of the Hunan Calligraphers Association, a calligraphy art consultant for China Contemporary Art Network, an Yidao calligrapher and painter, a national learning and I Ching master, and a senior inheritor of national learning and the I Ching. His calligraphy works have been repeatedly exhibited and awarded in national and provincial-level exhibitions. His artworks have also participated in numerous renowned domestic and international painting and calligraphy competitions, winning multiple awards. He has been invited to hold calligraphy exhibitions and artistic exchange activities in South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and other places, earning widespread praise and admiration from all sectors of society.
Perhaps nurtured by the spiritually rich landscape of Yanling, he developed a deep love for art from childhood. Initially captivated by Xu Beihong's ink paintings of galloping horses, he continuously practiced and internalized their essence, gradually cultivating his artistic talent. In calligraphy, since childhood he has copied classic models such as Yan Zhenqing's "Dobao Ta," Liu Gongquan's "Xuanmi Ta," Ouyang Xun's "Li Quan Ming," Wang Xizhi's "Lanting Xu," Wen Zhengming's small regular script "Li Sao Jing," "Cao Tang Shi Zhi," "Ma Dao Cheng Gong," "Tian Dao Chou Qin," "Hou De Zai Wu," "Shun," "Jia He Wan Shi Xing," and "Ren Jian Xian Jing."
Under the guidance of the master calligrapher Huang Youzhi, he later focused on the Ouyang style and absorbed the essence from Tian Yingzhang, recognized as the foremost contemporary master of the Ouyang style. After decades of diligent study and rigorous practice, he gradually developed his own unique calligraphic style: running script that is vigorous and powerful, with dynamic structure, graceful and unrestrained, yet never conventional. He innovatively integrated landscape ink-wash imagery into the forms of characters, making the characters resemble paintings. Meanwhile, Master Gengfuzi has continuously studied national learning and the I Ching, incorporating concepts such as the five elements' generation and克制, and the yin-yang energies of the Eight Trigrams into his artistic creations, thus forming his distinctive Yidao calligraphy and painting style.
Master Gengfuzi's works have been auctioned on numerous major platforms and collected by thousands of entrepreneurs, collectors, and art enthusiasts. He has frequently donated his artworks for charity auctions and has long provided free calligraphy training for the elderly at the Hunan First Welfare Home, enriching their later years. He also regularly offers calligraphy instruction for various social institutions and organizations. Due to his significant influence in preserving national learning, multiple media outlets, including Hunan TV's Public Channel, have produced special reports on Master Gengfuzi. His artworks possess considerable appreciation potential and are highly valuable for collection.
