It is evident that the ancients conceived of the idea of assessing the situation and acting accordingly—understanding the trend and moving with it, reaping the benefits of the moon's breeze. Based on this, we can regard the ancient people’s contemplation of the principles of rule formation as, to some extent, unconscious. Although the concept of “intent precedes brushwork” had already emerged as an expression of their creative awareness, their understanding of writing hindered further reflection on the thematic nature of rules; the significance of brush technique and lexical methods outweighed that of overall composition. The primary purpose guiding their construction of rules was “reason” and “Dao,” permeating the entire subject under the impetus of civilizational energy.
To date, the practical utility of calligraphy has nearly vanished; it is now classified as a distinct category within the realm of visual arts. Regarding rules, it is no longer bound by the energies and utility of traditional civilization. Its possibilities now encompass extensive engagement with other artistic disciplines, visual aesthetics, principles of compositional structure, and multidimensional understanding of traditional masterpieces, rendering the prospects of rules far more expansive. Perhaps this is precisely where our era transcends that of our predecessors—due to the independent significance of calligraphy, as well as the extension, and even potential subversion, of traditional concepts.
